The West Plains tennis team started the year off strong with a successful fall season. The strong fall season set the tone for their spring matches beginning in February. With the heart of spring season near, the determined tennis athletes have been working hard to prepare for matches. Soon, they will be beginning their spring postseason battle to extend their season, hopefully all the way to the state match starting on May 16.
“We are getting ready to start our spring season on February 23, which is our individual season,” said head tennis coach Cristah Cochran. “We’ll have two boys singles players, two girls singles players, two boy doubles teams, two girls doubles teams, and two mixed doubles teams competing in tournaments across the state of Texas.”
“We have tournaments, like, basically throughout most of the school year, besides April,” said varsity tennis player Jenna Larson.”It goes from like the first weekend of April to May, that’s district.” The long season requires athletes to persevere and stay positive through the ups and downs of the season.
“It’s going to be difficult to say goodbye to this year’s seniors because they are the ones who laid the foundation for the tennis program at West Plains,” said Cochran. “When we started, it was just those six kids and me trying to figure it out. But – the future is also very exciting. We have a group of talented 8th graders who are working hard every day and will no doubt contribute to a successful Wolfpack tennis program in the years to come.” There is plenty to look forward to within the tennis program including the spring 2024 spring season and years to come. This year’s seniors have set a great example by displaying strong leadership in a winning program, serving teammates, and leaving their mark.
The tennis team will take on Amarillo ISD schools in the Amarillo Relays tournament on March 28.
