Prepping for the big matchup against Palo Duro, senior Mason Gomez warms up and enjoys senior night.

Senior Mason Gomez is the starting inside linebacker and is a part of the captain council for the varsity football team at West Plains High School. He started playing football at five years old after becoming inspired by his older brothers playing the sport. He immediately fell in love with the sport and hasn’t looked back since.

After the past few games this season, Coach Cummings has been really impressed by Gomez’s skills and believes that he has done a tremendous job of executing their defense, evolving as a player, and leading on the field. “He has been as steady of a leader and player as I have ever coached,” said head coach Adam Cummings, “You know you are getting his best everyday and he leads by example. Although he may not have the stats that other players might have, what he does for our team day in and day out is immeasurable.” Mason was honored to be chosen by Coach Cummings and said, “I think he chose me based on my leadership in and outside of athletics, my work ethic, and my character on and off of the field.” Both himself and Cummings said that he brings great energy, leadership, experience, motivation, and overall skills to the team and is a great asset overall.

Mason’s advice for the lowerclassmen is to, “really enjoy high school and soak it all in. Go to the games, hang out with your friends, go have fun. These four years you get in high school go by way too fast. You don’t have as much time as you think, and you don’t want to be a senior looking back with regrets. You’re going to make dumb choices, make mistakes, and get in trouble, but you can learn from those experiences.”
